About Makush Art Gallery

Makush Art Gallery is a must-visit for art enthusiasts eager to explore the works of new and emerging artists in Addis Ababa. The collection of contemporary paintings — portraits, landscapes, and urban collages — offers insight into the city’s evolving art scene. Founded in 2001 by Tesfaye Hiwet, Makush began by exhibiting the work of 15 local artists. Today the gallery works with more than 100 artists and holds an eclectic collection of paintings in the Mega Building on Bole Road. One of the key objectives for Makush is the promotion of a strong and modern view of Ethiopia abroad. That picture is told through artworks that range from traditional to contemporary storytelling, and through international exhibitions of Ethiopian art in Europe and America. Nathnael Yohannes, the current owner and manager, has been associated with Makush for over 20 years. The gallery welcomes new young artists each year and remains a favorite venue for visitors and their tour guides.
